As the new year begins, no team in men’s college basketball remains unbeaten. The last three, in fact, all lost for the first time on Saturday. That group included Villanova, leading to a change at the top of the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll.
Michigan State is now No. 1. The Spartans were voted at the top of 25 of the 30 ballots cast this week. Duke, the team responsible for the Spartans’ lone loss, moves up a spot to No. 2.
The Blue Devils were first on four ballots this week. Villanova slips to No. 3 but retained one No. 1 nod. Xavier climbs a notch to No. 4, and West Virginia, which won a pair of road games to start its Big 12 campaign, rounds out the top five.
Oklahoma makes the biggest move of the week. The Sooners jump five spots to No. 7 after handing TCU its first loss of the season. No. 23 Arkansas and No. 25 Clemson enter the poll, replacing Baylor and Florida State.
Texas A&M had the biggest fall from No. 6 to No. 13 after the Aggies were beaten by Alabama.
