Ellen Page, who became a LGBT hero when she came out in 2014, is now a married woman.
The 30-year-old star of Juno, Inception and the recent remake of Flatliners wed Emma Portner, who teaches contemporary jazz at the Broadway Dance Center in New York.
Page posted the news Wednesday on Twitter and Instagram, with a photo of the couple’s hands showing off wedding bands on their ring fingers.
“Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife. @emmaportner,” the caption read
Portner posted the same picture on her Instagram with the caption, “I get to call this incredible woman MY WIFE! @ellenpage I LOVE YOU!”
Page’s publicist also confirmed the union, according to the Associated Press.
In addition to teaching dance, Portner, of Ottawa, Ontario, has choreographed for Justin Bieber, according to her bio on the Broadway Dance Center website. According to Dance Spirit magazine, she is one of 13 young choreographers who are “changing the dance world.”
“Her performance and choreography appear in Justin Bieber’s Life Is Worth Living video as well as on his Purpose World Tour. The New York Times calls her ‘beguiling.’ Dance Spirit magazine writes, ‘Her intricate, gestural work requires the coiled energy of a large predator,’ ” her profile reads.
People reported that Page and Porter have been posting pictures of themselves together on social media since the summer.
Page came out in February 2014. Speaking at a conference in Las Vegas to promote the welfare of LGBT youth, Page got a standing ovation after she told the crowd:
“I am here today because I am gay. And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”
Later, she said she anticipated a different reaction to her declaration. “I expected so much more hate,” she told Flare magazine. But the aftermath “was just remarkably positive, which is beautiful, because it’s indicative of the change that’s happening.
In September 2015, she was dating Samantha Thomas; the two hit the red carpet for her film Freeheld at Toronto Film Festival, where they made their debut as a couple. .
