Jessica Chastain is always at the forefront when it comes to championing women’s rights, most recently for the Times Up campaign in light of the Hollywood sexual assault scandal.
But the 40-year-old actress doesn’t confine her fierce attitude to her personal life – she’s taken on some pretty impressive acting roles too.
On January 1 her new movie Molly’s Game hit cinemas in the UK, so we’ve round up all of her most kick-ass movie characters to date…
Molly’s Game (2018)
Based on a true story, Molly’s Game sees Chastain play ex-Olympic skiier Molly Bloom who turns her hand to Poker. She runs the world’s most exclusive high-stakes game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by the FBI. The all-star cast includes Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Chris O’Dowd, Michael Cera and Joe Keery. It’s a must-watch.
Woman Walks Ahead (2017)
Another film based on a true story, this time Chastain plays Caroline Weldon, a portrait painter from New York who travels to Dakota to paint the Sitting Bull. Her character is an Indian rights activist.
Miss Sloane (2016)
Miss Sloane is a talented but ruthless lobbyist, notorious for bending the rules. Here, she takes on the most powerful opponent of her career. “I work on behalf of causes I believe in, that’s how I sleep at night” – so much girl power.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016)
In the critically-acclaimed prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, Chastain plays a warrior called Sara, the long-lost wife of Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman. As part of a female-dominated cast, she fights to survive the evil intentions of the ice queen.
The Martian (2015)
Proving kick-ass sci-fi characters aren’t just for boys, in The Martian Chastain plays Commander Lewis who is in charge of a space mission. The astronauts mistakenly believe that one member of their team Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is dead and havoc ensues.
Interstellar (2014)
In Chastain’s first (Oscar-winning) sci-fi film, a team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space to try to ensure the survival of humanity. Starring alongside the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, she plays a brilliant scientist called Murph.
In one of her heaviest roles, Chastain plays Maya, a CIA officer on the trail of Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty is based on the true story of what happened beyond the 9/11 attack, and her character was a real life al-Qaeda expert who was instrumental is finding the terrorist leader.
The Debt (2010)
Her first kick-ass lead character, Chastain plays a Mossad agent called Rachel Singer who is involved in a secret mission to capture a Nazi war criminal. Set in 1965, the film later moves ahead 30 years, where the original girl boss Helen Mirren takes over as the female protagonist
