GLAMOUR’s Leanne Bayley went off to interview Riverdale’s KJ Apa to talk about his American accent (he’s from New Zealand originally!), his red hair transformation, and his insecurities when joining the show. He also explains his love for his co-star Cole Sprouse (AKA Jughead)…
KJ Apa on… his American accent
“It’s interesting. I didn’t ‘work on it’ – I mean, I worked on it by myself but it was kind of one of those things that I was able to do. I’m lucky in that respect, I think because it means I don’t have to focus on it while I’m working, I can just focus on the work.”
Would he ever do something with a British accent? “I’d love to do something that would involve a british accent,” he said.
KJ Apa on… Whether he wants Archie with Betty or Veronica
“I get asked that all the time… it’s not really for me to comment on. If I do, the Internet will probably explode. But yeah, I’ll leave it up to the writing, for sure.”
KJ Apa on… Cole Sprouse & whether they had an instant ‘bromantic connection’
“No, it definitely wasn’t instant … He’s a good guy. It took us a while for us to become close. We go camping – we actually drove back to LA from Vancouver which was sick – a really nice trip. And we’ve been camping out in Canada, which is really beautiful too.”
KJ Apa on… his career in the music business
“On the charts? Maybe. One day, hopefully. I dunno… that would be cool. I would like that. My dream duet partner? Ed Sheeran is a legend, he’s cool. Do they have to be alive? Stevie Ray Vaughan I’d say. He’s a legend. One of my favourites.”

“I was kinda nervous. I didn’t know how I’d look with red hair, and I was thinking ‘If I look like an idiot, maybe they’ll recast me’ or something. Or ‘maybe they’ll cast someone who looks better with red hair.’ But yeah, I got it done, and I’ve had it done every two weeks now which is kinda gnarly but it’s just part of it. Part of the job.

“We’re kept in the dark for a lot of it. We get the script, like, a night before we start shooting as well. But obviously we have the new Reggie [Mantle] coming and I know the writers really want to dive in to that, and explore that character. It’s going to get really dark for Archie, with his dad being shot. Whether Fred lives or dies, it’s going to change Archie’s life for sure and I think we’re going to see a completely different side to him. There’s going to be a lot of relationship conflicts and more shipping for you guys probably.”
For anyone who’s confused by ‘shipping’, it’s a term used to describe fan fictions that take characters and put them as a pair. Riverdale is rife with Shipping.
