Jamiroquai, the Mad Hatter of British Funk, Is Headed to Coachella

Another year, another much-scrutinized Coachella lineup announcement. And while One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson may be griping on Twitter about the festival’s apparent lack of bands, most of the Internet is focused on something else entirely: throwback British funk band Jamiroquai’s relatively high billing (they’re the same font size as chart-toppers SZA, Migos, and Cardi B).
Most 18-year-olds probably don’t know who Jamiroquai is—especially considering that the band had just come back from a seven-year hiatus in 2017 and that their biggest hits came out before they were even born. As much as young listeners should familiarize themselves with this band’s musical contributions, they should also take a moment to appreciate lead singer Jay Kay’s penchant for some seriously stylish chapeaus.

From the puffy black hat in the legendary “Virtual Insanity” video to the somehow even larger headgear he sports in “When You Gonna Learn?,” it’s clear that Kay cornered the over-the-top hat market way before Pharrell Williams ever did. So maybe when you’re packing your bags for Coachella this year, pay tribute to Jamiroquai by leaving behind that now-cliché flower crown for a hat that would make Jay Kay proud.
