Oscars 2018 fabulously over-the-top red carpet looks

On Sunday’s toned-down Academy Awards red carpet, which was dominated by shades of neutrals, it was a delight to see the few stars who attempted more daring looks.

St. Vincent

Before joining Sufjan Stevens to perform his nominated song Mystery of Love on the Oscars stage, St. Vincent presented us with this red carpet look from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.

Salma Hayek

Hayek usually opts for form-fitting bombshell gowns on red carpets, so her over-the-top, sequins-layered-with-diamonds Oscars look was an entertaining change for the star, who wore a Gucci gown and a set of jewels worth more than most mortgages.

Agnés Varda

Tied with Ivory for the night’s oldest nominee, Agnés Varda — nominated for best documentary for Faces Places — paired rosy glasses with a floral Gucci loungewear set for an exercise in daring Oscars look. Every actress who showed up wearing eggshell white Sunday ought to take note.
