These female-fronted movies were the top three highest-grossing blockbusters of 2017

2017 turned out to be an extremely significant milestone for women in Hollywood…

Most of us will remember 2017 as the year sexual harassment scandals rocked Hollywood. But among the dark and exhausting controversy, was some good news. For the first time since 1958, films with female actors in lead roles topped North America’s box office.

The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman became the top three highest-grossing movies of 2017, creating a much-needed milestone.

The latest installment of famous space saga Star Wars starring Daisy Ridley became the most popular movie of the year taking in $533.1m after just three weeks of release. It was closely followed by Disney’s live-action Beauty and The Beast fronted by Emma Watson, which held the number one spot up until New Years Eve and took $504m.

Gal Gadot’s kickass Wonder Woman, which is also DC Comics’ only critically-acclaimed hit thus far, was placed at number three raking in $412.6m.

This is significant not only because they’re all *amazing* movies but because the last time the top three films of the year were fronted by women was in 1958 – South Pacific, Auntie Mame, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof were the most popular movies in America.

And with the release of even more female-fronted blockbusters including the highly anticipated Ocean’s Eight, A Wrinkle in Time and Tomb Raider reboot, 2018 is set to be yet another successful year for women in Hollywood. HURRA!
